Description of Loading Classes – LOADING STANDARDS
IS 1726:1991
LD-2.5 (2.5 Tonnes) : Suitable for use within residential and institutional complexes/areas with pedestrian but occasional light motor vehicle traffic. These covers are also used for ‘Inspection Chambers’
MD-10 (10 Tonnes) :Suitable for use in service lanes/roads, on pavements for use under medium duty vehicular traffic including car parking areas.
HD-20 (20 Tonnes) : Suitable for use in institutional/commercial/carriageways/city trunk roads/bus terminus, with heavy duty vehicular traffic of wheel loads between 5-10 tonnes like Buses/Trucks and parking areas and where the manhole chambers are located in between the pavement and the middle of the road.
EHD 35 (35 Tonnes) :Suitable for use on carriageways/industrial/port areas/near warehouses/godowns where frequent loading and unloading of trucks/trailers are common, with slow to fast moving vehicular traffic of the types having wheel loads upto 11.5 tonnes irrespective of the location of the manhole chambers.

Due to inherit limitation of FRP, designs of FRP covers for loading classes D-400 & E-600 are subject to technical viability.
A-15 (1.5 Tonnes) : Areas which can only be used by pedestrians and pedal cyclists.
B-125 (12.7 Tonnes) : Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable parks or car parking decks.
C-250 (25.5 Tonnes) : For gullytops installed in the area of curbside channels of roads.
D-400 (40.8 Tonnes) : Carriageways of roads (including pedestrian streets), hard shoulders and parking areas, for all types of road vehicles.
E-600 (61 Tonnes) : Areas of imposing high wheel loads, e.g. dock and aircraft pavements.
